Effective partnership between research expertise, government and industry is the key to overcoming the energy challenge we face.

The Midlands Engine agenda brings together the research expertise of the region’s universities in a programme supported by the Midlands Local Authorities, LEPs and UK Government and enhancing the engineering, manufacturing, research and scientific heritage and expertise across the region, encouraging national and multinational companies to invest and base themselves in the area.

Supporting and supported by this agenda, ERA will create new jobs and provide a platform for skills and productivity for the region and wider UK, as well as contribute to new products and services related to the energy, automotive and manufacturing sectors.

The Midlands contributes £12bn p.a. the UK economy through its manufacturing output. It is at the heart of the UK’s automotive industry, with existing clusters in advanced manufacturing, engineering and science and has well-established major international links.

The region has significant expertise in a wide range of energy technologies that provide real relevance for industry: it is home to around 1000 energy-related companies and 2240 transport-related companies. ERA’s energy research funding portfolio is £71.7m (EPSRC).

ERA has identified challenges it can help to address in research, skills and the economy.
